United States actress, mogul and philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey, winner of this year’s Cecil B DeMille award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”, brought the audience to their feet with a rousing speech at the 75th Golden Globes.
Winfrey accepted the Cecile B. DeMille award with a speech that could best be described as “Presidential”.
The American chat show legend who is the first black woman to get the award, she said she is “humbled and privileged”.
The 2018 Cecile B. DeMille winner, also spoke against intolerance and abuse and also the importance of a free press.
“We all know the press is under siege these days, but we also know it is the insatiable dedication to uncovering the truth that stops us turning a blind eye to intolerance and injustice.
“Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we have. I am inspired by the women who have felt strong and empowered enough to speak up and tell their personal stories.
“I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of assault and abuse. They’re the women whose names we’ll never know – the domestic workers, the farm workers, workers in factories.
“For too long women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak out against powerful men. But their time is up. Their time is up!
“I want all the girls watching this to know that a new day is on the horizon. And when that day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women and some pretty phenomenal men”, Winfrey said.
